Spain's Largest Green Hydrogen Plant: A Game-Changer in Castellón
Toledo, Monday, 3 February 2025.
Spain, known for its sunny beaches, now heralds a green hydrogen revolution with bp and Iberdrola’s 25 MW plant in Castellón. This powerhouse is set to produce 2,800 tonnes annually, slashing CO2 by 23,000 tonnes, translating to 5,000 fewer cars on the road! Get ready for the green glow-up.
Transforming Energy Production
I’m excited to share news about a groundbreaking development in Spain’s renewable energy sector. Bp and Iberdrola have just selected Toledo-based Imefy to supply the main transformer for their landmark green hydrogen facility [1]. The plant, featuring a powerful 25 MW electrolyser, will be powered by renewable electricity through a substantial power purchase agreement with Iberdrola España, delivering 200GWh annually from their wind and solar projects [1][2]. This is a significant step in Spain’s journey toward sustainable energy production.
Technical Innovation and Timeline
The technical specifications are impressive - Imefy will provide a three-phase power transformer with 37 megavolt-amperes capacity and a 66/30 kilovolts transformation ratio [1]. The transformer is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2026, with the entire facility expected to be operational by the second half of 2026 [1][5]. The project represents an investment of over €70 million [1], partly supported by €15 million from the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan [1].
Environmental Impact and Future Applications
What excites me most is the environmental impact of this project. Once operational, the plant will produce 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen annually [1][2], replacing the grey hydrogen currently used at bp’s Castellón refinery. This switch will prevent the emission of 23,000 tonnes of CO2 yearly [1]. Looking ahead, the green hydrogen could revolutionize hard-to-decarbonize industries in the Valencian Community, particularly in ceramics, chemical industries, and heavy transport [1].
